Princeton:: Healthy Halloween Candy Anyone?

I really love Halloween but the thought of my little ghost and goblin eating all of that crapola candy really sucks the fun out the holiday. I’m just not doing it, and unfortunately, I’ll be the wicked witch for tossing it in the garbage after they’ve worked so hard getting it. Really, I can’t even bring myself to donate it. Likewise, they may never forgive me if I passed out raisins and granola bars to the unknowing trick or treaters who happen upon our house.

So you can imagine how excited I was to come across the on a search to find a vegan version of Fluff (found!). The’s tagline reads, “All the FUN without the FUNNY stuff!” which in essence means no artificial dyes, colors, sweeteners, flavors, preservatives, or hydrogenated oils. You can even search for treats according to holiday or dietary restrictions, i.e., vegan, gluten-free, wheat-free, egg-free, peanut-free, etc. In case you were wondering whether that CVS-bought candy is really that bad, consider this: FD&C dyes are NOT certified to be safe. They are only certified by the Food & Drug Administration to contain an acceptable amount of lead, mercury, arsenic, benzidine (a known cancer causer) and other contaminants. But how much is acceptable? That has been widely disputed and challenged…but does it really matter if you knew that Red, Yellow, and Greenfood coloring comes from crude oil, the source for gasoline? Or how about a little waste product from the paper mills for an after dinner treat? “Vanillin” is imitation vanilla flavoring—some companies built factories next to pulp mills to turn the undesirable by-product into fake flavors often used in highly processed cookies, candies and other foods.

I didn’t mean to frighten you but this is way scarier than a full moon and a black cat. Can you guess who I’m going to be this year for Halloween? Glenda, the good witch. Want some natural candy little girl?
